Our most recent project deals with the analysis of seed dispersal interaction networks under current Climate Change. The current climate change is causing significant alterations in natural systems, including changes in species distribution, which in turn leads to changes in the structure of biotic communities and ecosystem functions. Anthropogenic activities like deforestation also exacerbate the effects of climate change, reducing populations of wild species and accelerating biodiversity loss. Despite its significance, little is known about the impacts of climate change and deforestation on biodiversity in Mexico, particularly in humid tropical ecosystems. The Usumacinta River Basin is the most biodiverse region in Mexico and Mesoamerica, and the most ecologically complex. In this project, the impact of climate change and deforestation on first-order and second-order interactions will be studied by analyzing species redistribution due to climate change along an altitudinal gradient in the Usumacinta River Basin. The project will use a combination of methodological approaches, including modeling of species distribution, field sampling, and modeling of empirical and theoretical interaction networks. The project will also involve training human resources in global change biology and generating scientific publications, as well as presenting results to communities and environmental authorities. The project aims to provide specific recommendations for the management plans of protected natural areas and their influence zones.
